The government intends to vaccinate all school teachers in India on a priority basis by September 5, which is National Teachers Day. More than 2 crore vaccination doses are being made available, in addition to the aim to distribute vaccines to every state this month. Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya said, “We have requested all states to try to vaccinate all school teachers on a priority basis before Teachers’ Day, which is commemorated on September 5th.”

The Minister of Education has also asked states to contribute to achieving the target. “This will be a key step towards reducing the barriers to their studies caused by the outbreak, as well as protecting future generations against Coronavirus. I also request that all state governments support and cooperate with our campaign in order to reinforce the future’s foundation.”

Schools have been closed across the country since March 2020. Students have been attending their classes online, but many students have been unable to attend classes due to lack of gadgets and a poor internet connection. Teachers’ vaccination is being prioritised as schools gradually reopening amid fears of the third wave of Covid-19 and a dearth of vaccines accessible for school students under the age of 18.

While the United States, Canada, and now Singapore have approved vaccinations for children, India is yet to do so for its population under the age of 18. Parents’ fears have grown as various reports imply that youngsters may be struck harder in the pandemic’s third wave.
